Melbourne’s food scene: from the beautiful coffee scene to the hidden gems of cafes tucked away in laneways. You can see the creativity, diversity and passion in the food.
Brick lane Melbourne
I loved walking through Guildford lane to the cafe. This makes you love Melbourne so much. The vibe is on point. The beautiful brick facade of the cafe, the hip windows and the grafity on the walls.
Brick Lane only takes reservations mid-week, so expect a queue on the weekends. Try their chilli scrambeld eggs or their corn and chilli waffles if you like the extra spice and want something else than the traditional eggs benny. The serving is generous, so you won’t leave hungry.
Krimper cafe
On the same street as Brick Lane is Krimper cafe. My friend and I stumled across this cafe on a saturday morning and we were hungry for a nice coffee and some food. You can see the history of the building and the rustic detailing gives it an industrial warehouse feel. We shared the Eggs Benny and the Almond French toast and loved both.
Embla
Embla was recommended to us by a local. This rustic looking winebar is hidden on Russel street. We went to Embla for the wine, but I would love to go back for their food. This place would be perfect for a date night. The staff knows their wines and can give you recommendations.
ShanDong MaMa mini
ShanDong Mama mini on Centre place is the mini version of ShanDong Mama. The establishment is tiny, but the laneway vibes and the excellent dumplings and food make up for it. The zucchini dumplings, cold sesame noodles and Chinese broccoli are superb. Can’t wait to go back.
Shanghai Village
On little burke street you will find the double story Shanghai Village. If you love dumplings, than you will love this place. It does get busy, which makes it sometimes difficult to understand each other. The bring your own alcohol policy is an added plus. You can order the meals through scanning the QR code.
