A short drive from Sydney are the Southern Highlands. Spend a long weekend away in the countryside. Plenty of fun activities to do and nice foods to eat.
Day 1
Illawara Fly
A great thing to do with the whole family is the Tree top walk. You can also choose for Zipline tours and Archery. The treetop walk is a 1.5 km walk through the rainforest. You will be 20-30 meters above ground walking on a steel walkway.
Fitzroy Falls
Featured in every tourist guide of the Southern Highlands, the Fitzroy falls have front-end paid parking at the visitor center, often bustling on weekends and holidays.
The falls are a short walk from the visitor center. There are various lookouts to view the falls. In summer, the water flow is lesser compared to the winter season.
Day 2
Morton national park
Before breakfast head out for an easy 45 min (1.4 km) walk at the Morton national park. There are different walks you can choose from. The Riverview walking track is a flat track where you walk through the native trees. There are numerous ferns and wildflowers. Once you reach the lookout there are picnic tables to have a rest and enjoy the view.
Wine tasting
Reserve your spot for a wine tasting at Bendooley Estate, experienced right at the Cellar Door (15 AUD per person 2023). Choose five wines from the menu featuring red, white, rosé, and sparkling wines. Afterwards you can also order a bottle to take home. I really recommend the prosecco. After the tasting, explore the venue. The Book Barn is a fantastic spot to purchase books, enjoy lunch, and sip on more wines.
If you like to visit another winery that is nearby or do another wine tasting, try out the Centennial vineyards. Their guided wine tastings (10 AUD per person). You can choose up to eight wines.
Dirty Janes Bowral
Dirty Janes Bowral is a treasure trove of antiques and artisan-made homewares. Take a stroll through the store and see if you can discover some hidden gems or souvenirs that add charm and lifelong memories to your home. And when in need of a break, there are also very cute cafes perfect for a lunch or a quick coffee fix.
Day 3
Check out at the hotel and have breakfast at Farm club Australia before travelling home. Farm Club Australia has a fully licensed café and are specialized in their gourmet pies. It is also possible to bring some pies home.
Where to stay?
Peppers Manor House
It is really easy to fall in love with Peppers Manor House. When you arrive at the hotel you will see why. This elegant country building has beautiful gardens, a pool and a golf course. The rooms and suites have a 1920’s feel to it. In the winter they have the fireplace going in the Great Hall. It is perfect for a romantic escape. On weekends there are markets on in the gardens.
Bundanoon Hotel
The Bundanoon Hotel has been there for a while. It is situated next to the train station. The hotel has a beer garden with a pool at the back of the building. The pub is at the front, near the parking place. It has a bistro that is open for lunch and dinner. It is also walking distance to shops and cafes in Bundanoon.
Osborn House
While I didn’t stay at this hotel, I highly recommend Osborn House for a romantic weekend getaway. This 5-star restored gem from 1892 offers a perfect escape. Disconnect from the world, enjoy your time with your partner, and perhaps with the kangaroos that drop by at dawn.
Beyond the stunning gardens, indulge in the spa and pool. Don’t miss out on the restaurant and the epic fire feasts where chefs cook on an open fire. It’s a blend of luxury, nature, and culinary delight.
