Out in the bush

Places to see in Groningen

Day one

Groningen has a lot to offer. Whether you are visiting the city of Groningen or going there to hike or cycle, there is something for everyone to do. This student city with a population of over 200,000 has a very vibrant and youthful feel to it.

Make sure to wander around the streets and check out the Groninger hofjes (courtyards) in the center. These little courtyards were used by the elderly and widows who lived in the houses surrounding them. If you want to know more about the history and culture of Groningen, I recommend booking a walking tour

Groninger museum

Just opposite of the train station is the Groninger Museum. The museum is very modern and colourful. Book you tickets online. The cost is 20 euros per person. With a museum card, it is 5 euros per person. Check out the exhibitions beforehand, as the museum changes the exhibition regularly.

Martinitoren

The tallest building in the center of Groningen is the Martinitoren. The tower is 97 meters high and situated on the Grote Markt (big market). A visit to this tower shouldn’t be missed. The tower was built in the 13th century. It survived lighting, fire and wars.

You can climb up the 300 steps to the giant bells and enjoy the beautiful views over the city. Tickets are 6 euros for adults.

Day two

Forum

The Forum in Groningen was opened in 2019. This cultural center has a library, tourist information center, Storyworld museum, cinema and restaurant. The Forum is a lively place mostly populated by students but is also used for exhibitions and as a meeting place for many people.

Make sure to go all the way to the top to have a drink in the skylounge or visit the roof terrace. It offers a beautiful view overlooking the city of Groningen.

Tip!

If you are scared of heights, make sure not to look down.

Where to stay

The city of Groningen has many options for accommodation. Staying in the city center is not cheap, so make sure to book in advance to get a good deal. Hotel rooms are available from 100 euros per night, and hostels are available from 70 euros per night.

How to get there?

Dutchies make it seem like Groningen is at the end of the world, but don’t worry. It is only a 2-hour drive by car or a 2-3 hour train ride. Mobile apps to download before taking the train are the NS app or the 9292 app. Check the app to see the quickest way to get to Groningen.

Catching the train from Amsterdam Centraal

Catch the NS train from Amsterdam Centraal to Almere Centrum and then switch to a train that will take you to Groningen.

Catching the train from Leiden Centraal

From Leiden, take the NS train to Zwolle and then change to a train with the direction to Groningen.

How to get around?

Groningen is a very walkable city, but if you would like to visit places a bit further out of town, you could catch the bus or rent an OV bike. Visiting places in the Netherlands is even more fun when it is easy to rent a bike, which is something I love about the Netherlands. Make sure you have the OV-fiets activated on your travel card, which is free. Renting a bike costs 4.45 euros per day. Check out this link for more information.

Where to eat?

There are many great restaurants to eat at in Groningen, whether you are just having a casual beer or wine or having lunch or dinner. If you want to have dinner at a specific restaurant, make sure to book it in advance. We tried a couple of places before we were able to find somewhere to eat.

Baxbier

A 30-minute walk from Central station is Bax brewery. The brewery is located on the water and has a restaurant inside where you can eat a snack or a full dinner. Their beers are definitely worth a try. If you’re interested in taking a tour, note that the English tours are only available on Fridays. During the tour, you’ll get a chance to see inside the brewery and learn about their brewing process. The tour ends with a beer tasting, where you can sample some of their delicious brews.

Other ways to get to Bax brewery:

Bus number 7 and 39 can drop you off at Bax brewery or you could hire the NS bike for the day.

De Uurwerker

De Uurwerker is a bistro hidden in the little streets in Groningen. This spacious cafe is open 7 days a week for a coffee in the morning or a dinner in the evening. It is a great place to relax and forget about the time.

Olijfboom Greek Canteen

Olijfboom Greek Canteen is not your average Greek restaurant in the Netherlands. Their fresh food brings you right back to Greece. The dishes are not too big, so you could order a few dishes that you can share with your partner or friends. Make sure to leave some room for dessert. The little restaurant is busy, so definitely book in advance.
